Description:
Description The Old Garden vineyard is the oldest Mourvèdre vineyard in the world planted in 1853. Dry-grown, original existing vines pre-Phylloxera. Eight rows of this rare and unique planting remain to this day at Rowland Flat and produce winemaker Dean Hewitson’s much-lauded single-vineyard table wine bearing the Old Garden name. The vineyard has been hand-tended and dry-farmed by Friedrich Koch and his direct descendants across three centuries. Appearance Medium red with a crimson hue Aroma Lifted forest berry, black cherry and orange peel. Palate Palate shows dense, lush blackberries & prune with hints of cigar box, violets and black pepper. Fine, seamlessly integrated tannins. Body full

Hewitson makes its home among some of the oldest vineyards in the world. Discovering the beauty within these venerable old vines and expressing their distinctive characters through winemaking that respects tradition and understands progress is the essence of Hewitson. Why his top Shiraz is called The Mad Hatter? "Despite appearances, it's not a ploy to grab some literary credibility and align Dean [Hewitson] with Lewis Carroll.'Hatter' is actually the nickname Dean's closest friends have used for years... and as for the "Mad"... well those you who've spent any more than 5 minutes with the man will surely understand."
