Description:
The wine has character, structure, power, complexity and balance. It will age for decades, the name Gattinara very possibly originated from “Catuli Ara”, “the Altar of Catulus” in Latin: the same altar represented on the label, connected to the battle of Campi Raudii, that took place near Gattinara.
Winery:
The Antonio Vallana estate dates back to 1787 (first bottles and first commercial vineyard in the Vallana family). The Vallana wines should be perceived as an iconic expression of the terroir. Alto Piemonte is the only place in Italy where Nebbiolo grows on acidic (rather than alcaline) soils of (super)volcanic origin. Nebbiolo from Alto Piemonte could actually be called a «Supervolcanic» wine.
Wine Making:
The grapes are hand harvested and manually selected before crushing, and then transferred to cement tanks for a 24 hour cold soak. In spring it is transferred into large oak barrels (7-12 Hl) for 24 months, and the wine must age for at least another year in accordance with the rules of the DOCG. However, Vallana traditionally ages the wine in bottle a few more years before releasing it.
